ExxonMobil and Porsche Prepare to Showcase Engineering Supremacy on Return to Le Mans

Mobil 1™ lubricant engineered to give Porsche the winning advantage at the 24 hours of Le Mans

  • Mobil 1 develops lubricant package to keep the engine of the Porsche 919 Hybrid LMP1 running like new for 24 hours of endurance race
  • Engineers behind Mobil 1 deliver technical support from the drawing board to the  Porsche LMP1 roll-out
  • Successful partnership between Porsche AG and ExxonMobil  continues in 2014 and marks 18 years of collaboration on and off the track

  • After 16 years away from the world famous Le Mans circuit, Porsche and Mobil 1 will showcase their engineering expertise at the upcoming 24 hours of LeMans.  The race will mark the culmination of nearly two years of working together on the LMP1 project.  The project began in 2012 when design and development started for Porsche’s single-turbo V4 2.0-litre direct-injection Porsche 919 Hybrid engine.

For Porsche, the world is watching their return with interest and with 16 overall victories Porsche is the most successful manufacturer in the history of Le Mans. So this season, perhaps more than at any other time in their 18 year relationship, the partners have worked hand-in-hand to maximise the power and efficiency of the new Porsche 919 Hybrid.

Mobil 1 offers outstanding protection for the Porsche 919 turbocharged engine at extreme temperatures, and under the high stress mechanicals conditions that are synonymous with Le Mans. Mobil 1‘s additive technology helps to keep the engine like new and prevents engine deposit build-up, ensuring minimum wear and maximum performance as the Porsche 919 covers distances up to 5,400 km at 9,000 rpm

Bruce Crawley, ExxonMobil Motorsport Manager, said, “We are delighted to be back at Le Mans with Porsche this season when the race takes on a new exciting era with the introduction of a new regulation cutting down the permitted fuel quantity per lap by around 30 percent. One of the major challenges has been to ensure that Mobil 1 delivers maximum efficiency to maximise power output. The need for power is, of course, counterbalanced by the need to protect the engine and ensure that the Porsche 919 Hybrid is able to complete the race - which is equivalent to a full season of Grand Prix racing."

Renowned as the classic of all long distance races, Le Mans is the greatest challenge that motorsport has to offer. The 13.63 kilometre ‘Circuit des 24 Heures’ is one of the world’s oldest and fastest race tracks and is unique with around 70 percent of a lap taken at full throttle.

Alexander Hitzinger, Technical Director LMP1 at Porsche, said, “High quality lubricants are important for endurance racing because we need maximum efficiency for the powertrain but we also need to minimise wear. Porsche and ExxonMobil have a very long, very successful relationship, built on a lot of trust and extremely good technical cooperation; we openly exchange ideas and data in order to achieve our common goal to maximise efficiency of the powertrain.”

Hitzinger continued, “The 2014 race will not be only a race between drivers, but also a competition between engineers; it is extremely important to work with the best technical partners, and for Porsche being able to work with Mobil 1 is a big advantage.”

    Alexander Hitzinger

Porsche Motorsport – Technical Director LMP1

Q: What challenges have Porsche and Mobil 1™faced in the build up to Le Mans in 2014?

A: Le Mans race is a 24 hour race, and with the top league being LMP1 which is the Le Mans prototype 1 category. It is a very very tough technical challenge, competitors are required to race for 24 hours really without any reliablility issues, and therefore it is probably the hardest race in the world.
The technical challenge in the Le Mans is finding the right balance between performance and reliability, endurance. Of course you have to finish, but you have to be also fast. It's easy to make a robust car which is slow, but you will never win. And on the other side you can make an extremely fast car which only lasts for two laps. So achieving both, that's the real challenge in Le Mans.

Q: What role do Mobil 1 lubricants play in keeping the Porsche LMP1 competitive?

A: Porsche and ExxonMobil have a very long, very successful relationship, which has been built on a lot of trust and extremely good technical cooperation.
High quality lubricants are important for endurance racing because we need one side maximum efficiency for the power train and we need to minimise wear. It's fulfilling both requirements: it's performance of the car and it's robustness of the car. Mobil 1 has developed a special lubricant package for the Porsche LMP1 car for 2014.
We exchange regularly ideas, we exchange very transparently and openly data in order to achieve our common goal which is to maximise efficiency of the powertrain.

Q: What is the joint goal of Porsche and Mobil 1 engineers?

A: The 24 Hours of Le Mans will not be only a race between drivers, it is also a competition between engineers.
It is extremely important to work with the best technical partners, and for Porsche being able to work with Mobil 1 is a big advantage. Working together our goal is for the team to be as competitive on the track as we are behind the scenes.

    Fritz Enzinger, Vice President LMP1

    Q. Can you give us an overall update on the LMP1 project, please?

A: We began our test programme in June 2013. In order to develop the complex LMP1 racing car so that it is fit to compete by the start of the World Endurance Championship many more kilometres of testing were required, but we are pleased with the progress that has been made so far and especially the podium at Silverstone and the pole position in Spa.

Q: What’s the most exciting thing about Porsche’s return to LMP1?

A: Motorsport was always an essential part of the Porsche brand. So for us it was only a matter of time before we returned as a factory to the top league of racing. From the 2014 season, the LMP1 racer will be fielded by the Weissach-based works team.
This means that after 16 years, Porsche once again wants to compete as a works team in the top category in sports car racing. The engineers were able to start with a blank sheet of paper in the design of the new LMP1 car. Hence, they were able to apply many new technologies within the framework of the regulations that will also benefit the customers of our road cars in the future. After all, there’s a race car inside every Porsche.

Q: Are we heading into a new golden era of sports car racing?

A: The new set of rules that apply to the World Endurance Championship for 2014 are clearly focused on efficiency and require the use of the latest hybrid drive technologies.
This makes the competition amongst engineers more interesting and presents us with completely new challenges. This also leads to further improvements of the entire hybrid technologies in our production cars.
Ultimately, our customers will benefit the most from the new World Endurance Championship with the new regulations. In our opinion it’s the right way to do motorsport in the future.

Q: Can you give us an overview of the setup here at Weissach?

A: Since the decision in mid-2011 to return with a LMP1 race car to top motorsport as a works effort, the Motorsport Centre at Weissach has grown significantly. A workshop and an administration building were built. There are now 230 employees who are responsible for the design, assembly, development and race and test operation of the LMP1 car.
When forming the entire team, we draw on an efficient combination of long-standing Porsche employees and specialists from various international motor racing classes. As Technical Director LMP1, Alexander Hitzinger has been responsible for the development of the LMP1 racing car since the end of 2011 and Andreas Seidl as Team Principal is responsible for the entire operational side in the works team.
